Rock 366 : Day 366 : Mohorovičić Discontinuity
Day 366 : For a finish to Project Rock 366 I had to do something special, so ladies & gentlemen I give you the Mohorovičić discontinuity. The top of the image is a serpentinised leucotroctolite (anothosite and olivine) cumulate from the lower crust and the lower part is serpentinised peridotite from the mantle. Coverack, Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall.
Note: In reality, at Coverack, the sequence passes from gabbro, interlayered gabbros, troctolites and serpentinised peridotites, to just serpentinites over ~100m so there is a transition zone rather than a sharp boundary.
